NDLEA arrest 170 for drugs related crime

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Bauchi State Command, has arrested 170 persons for drug trafficking-related offences and seized over 300 kilogrammes of illegal drugs.

The Commander of the NDLEA in Bauchi State, Mr. Ibrahim Abdul, who disclosed this to journalists on Thursday in an interview in Bauchi, said this was achieved between January and August this year.

He added that while 83 of those arrested had been convicted in the court and sentenced to various jail terms, others who were found to be users of the drugs, were counseled and released.

Ibrahim stated that there had been sustained efforts by the agency, which were evident in the reduction of drug trafficking in the state.

He said a few cases were still pending in court as a result of the strike embarked upon by the courts in the state.

Abdul said, “We are doing our best in fighting drug abuse and there has been a tremendous decline in the rate of drug trafficking in the state. We have carried out several raids in many black spots to comb illicit drugs and their traffickers to make the state drug-free.

“If there is an increase in drug trafficking, then it means we are not working but we are; that is why there has been a high reduction.

“The synergy between NDLEA and other sister security agencies in the state has been so strong and has helped us in this direction. We have a cordial working relationship with them and they sometimes make arrests and hand over the suspects to us. So they’ve been very helpful.”

He called on the state government to assist the command with more vehicles to ease its operations.

“We will do more if the state government will release more vehicles to the NDLEA for our operations,” he added.

The state commander advised parents to monitor the whereabouts of their children and wards, noting that this would assist the parents to detect the early stages of a child’s involvement in drug abuse, if any.
