COMMUTERS and residents have decried the poor state of roads in Warri and Effurun metropolis in Delta State, calling on the state government to declare a state of emergency on the road.
Various commuters and residents who spoke to Vanguard yesterday however hinged the cause of the failed roads on poor construction and the Bus Rapid Transit introduce in the twilight of former Givernor Emmanuel Uduaghan regime.
According to Joseph Dolor, a commercial bus driver, "The state of Effurun/Sapele road in Effurun is terrible. It is killing our business, we dont know what the government is doing. The road is totally destroyed.
"We plead with the Governor to hasten up and do something about the road. Is he waiting for us to e dead before he coe to fix it?"
On his part, Tony Gbadia, a tricycle operator sad, "This BRT nor get work, make dem remove am comot so that dem go fit repair the road well. The road was good before Uduaghan come scatter am say him want to do BRT, make Okowa come do the road we don tire."
Mrs. Janet Oluwole, a passenger in a commercial bus said,"it is so sad that Uduaghan destroyed thisngood road by federal government for God knows BRT. Traveling to Effurun roundabout from main market is hell now, you spend hours instead of minutes.
"Okowa seems to have abandon Warri completely if not why has he not hear our cries and remove this BRT. No single good road in the whole of Effurun and many parts of Warri, this is sad."
In a related development, Members of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA Warri Chapter has called on Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State Governor to immediately halt the ongoing overlaying of the Airport road due to the damages it has done.
NBA said that the call became necessary as the smooth solid road has become a nightmare, the lawyers then urge the governor to ensure that the road is restored it to its original state.
The NBA made call in statement signed by Mr. John.O. Aikpokpo-Martins, Esq. and O.A. Okpakpor, Esq, Chairman and Secretary respectively in Warri.
The NBA said the activities on the road has made the road surface to be bumpy and hazardous to vehicular traffic.
The NBA pleged his resolve in collaborating with the Delta State
Government in ensuring that living in Warri metropolis is much more easier, pleasurable and considerably stress free.
" It is common knowledge that the said road which traverses both the Uvwie and Warri South Local Government Areas of the State was before now, smoothly laid out with asphalt and indeed, afforded motorists a pleasurable and easy ride.
"The attendant loss in man-hours occasioned by the persistent and avoidable hold-ups, damage to vehicles that daily ply the route and immeasurable stress suffered by motorists alike, are unimaginable."
While noting that the NBA is not interested in the government's rationale in continuing with the over-laying projects of airport road it inherited from the immediate past administration, the NBA expressed disappointment with the Delta State Government over the continued over-laying of the airport road.
