We must fight Ignorance, Disease, Poverty to Revolutionise Africa - Lumumba

By Akpokona Omafuaire

ABRAKA - THE Consciousness of Africa and Pan African erudite Scholar, Prof. Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba of Kenya,  has charged Africans to fight ignorance,  diseases,  poverty to revolutionise Africa.

Lumumba gave the charged while delivering the 30th anniversary commemorative lecture, titled: "Whither Education in Africa", at the Delta State University Abraka.

The law Professor harped on the need for Africans to value, and respect their culture, use talents, professional and infrastructures we have in Africa than seeking for solutions from our colonial masters.

According to him, "Its right time, we fight against ignorance,  poverty,  diseases which are our common enemies.  We have been miseducated for too long.

"So many years after independence and building Universities. What has changed, has Africa attain it heights? Not that we have shortage of professional. We have to unlearn what we learn.

"We must be proud of our cultural heritage. We Africans produced all the professionals but when we want anything,  we go to Europe and West to get it.

"Africans produce Engineers yet we cannot manufacture our own cars and phones. The mistake we must not make is the mistake of giving up.

"The University has made contributions. No matter, how rich you're but you cannot buy back the past year.

"Education is the only thing that can make us achieve these things. We must take stock of what we have achieved. Have we produced an Army of young men who will change Africa?

"You are a droplet of the ocean called Nigeria but be a good droplet.

"You must remember that, every institution is like a human being. And you are no longer on the infant stage but an adult stage where we can fight to rebuild Africa of our dreams." He stated.

"The music for change must remain the same.  The change is intergenerational,  if we think that change is going to happen in 20 or 30years then we are joking.  Change can take 100years even more. Our duty is to play our parts and ensure we pass over the baton to the next generation." Prof. Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba concluded.

Delsu @30: Prof. Patrick Lumumba sees bright future for Africans

By Akpokona Omafuaire

ABRAKA - RENOWNED erudite Scholar, Prof. Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, has assured Africans of a bright future ahead in the African continent, urging them not to be retard in their quest of acquiring education.

Lumumba gave the assurance on yesterday while delivering the 30th anniversary commemorative lecture, titled: "Whither Education in Africa", at
the Delta State University Abraka.

According to Prof. Loch Otieno  Lumumba: "Talking about Education in Africa, one must go down in history back to when Africa was not invaded by men of the outside world. They divided Africa into small entities and turned us into robots.

"And from that day henceforth the entire agenda was to convert us into tools that will be used for their benefits.

"They came and told us that our language was primitive, they told us that we have to speak English and French. They told us that our gods was not God, they told us that everything we did wasn't proper.

"But if we continue to worry about Africa. We will continue to make mistakes of giving up. We must remember the efforts of our past heroes of Nigeria who fought for the independence of Nigeria to liberate us from the slave of the colonial masters.

"And change the continent of Africa through Education and we should not forget the sacrifices and voices of our past heroes who used their education to fight for the independence of some countries in Africa.

"Africa,  we should learn to consume what we cultivate than depending on consuming importated foods. It's right time we Africans rely on Africa talents to solve some of the problems we have here in Africa."

On the 30th anniversary of DELSU, Prof.  Patrick Lumumba said that, "Delta State University Abraka, has made enormous contributions to the development of Abraka, Delta, Nigeria and Africa.

"As Africans,  we should put off low esteem and be proud of the things that we do in Africa. We should be proud of the talents we have produced in Delta State University Abraka and use them in solving some of our problems in Abraka, Delta State, and Nigeria at large.

"As we celebrate Delta State University Abraka 30 years of existence and some of the notable achievements of the University over the past years. Its time we re-energize and put on more efforts to contribute your quota to the development of Africa."

Papa Ayo doles out N65 million to empower members.

By Akpokona Omafuaire

WARRI - HIS Eminence, Papa Ayo Oritsejafor,  popular cleric and founder of Word of Life Bible Church, Papa Ayo Oritsejafor yesterday doled out N65 million in the 15th edition of his yearly poverty alleviation programme.

Pastor Ayo while addressing 767 beneficiaries at the event said emphasis on "dignity in labour" will encourage hard work across the society.

The former CAN President also cautioned Nigerians against voting for failed politicians who give money in exchange for their votes.

He urged Nigerians to be proud of any honest job they are doing for living.

According to him, "We must in this nation begin to reemphasize the dignity of labour. People must be proud to rather be a groundnut seller, than beg people for transport. I admire young ladies, some of them under the sun at some strategic junctions, who instead of selling their bodies, get people to use the PoS machines and get a little commission out of it.

"If you are making N5 be proud of it. You are better than a thief who makes N1 million a day and is worth nothing. Don't look down on yourself.

"When politicians come and give you N2,000 to vote for them, don't vote for them. Since they didn't come near you, now they want your fake vote. They are still going to rig the election, but they want your fake votes, so they give you N2,000, N5,000, one-quarter bag of rice, salt and so on.

"What I am trying to tell you is be proud of who you are. Whatever you can do for yourself, do it. The token plus what we have tried to teach you is so you can get something doing. Be proud of it. We want to take girls off the brothels. We want to take people off the streets," the cleric charged.

He further encouraged them to be innovative in the different skills acquired.

Governor of Delta state, represented by the executive secretary of the Delta State Technical and Vocational Education Board, Engr. Smart Nkem, said the programme aligns with one of the cardinal objectives of the State Government, which is to empower people.

He urged the beneficiaries to seek further training, as the essence of the training and empowerment is to make them entrepreneurs, to become self-sufficient, self-reliant, employable and deployable.

Okowa called on other churches to emulate the gesture as it will help "reduce crime and youths restiveness" in the society.

Director of Microbusiness Empowerment Programme,  Pastor Okeoghene Obiegbedi, disclosed that the programme kicked off in December 2005, with an average cost of N30 million per edition.

He listed other humanitarian gestures by the cleric and the church to include scholarships to over 1,918 indigent students to study in Nigerian Universities and polytechnics, donation of motorcycles, tricycles, new cars, grinding and sewing machines among others.

The 2021/2022 edition of the programme which is the 15th one, is targeted to empower 1,100 individuals with N55,000 each, totalling N60.5 million.

The beneficiaries who are members of the church passed through a one-month "discipleship training" and were "screened and trained in different trades and skills" such as drying of fresh fish, catering, shoemaking, soap making tailoring and others.

Abia State Deputy Governor impeachment, hear what the Governor plan to do

By Akpokona Omafuaire, Warri

Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has denied plans to impeach his Deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu.

Reports have been making the rounds that Ikpeazu has concluded plans to impeach his Deputy over the latter’s declaration of interest for the 2023 governorship election.

However, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Onyebuchi Ememanka,Ikpeazu explained that he has never discussed such issue with anybody, stressing that the Deputy Governor’s gubernatorial ambition is not enough to warrant any plan to remove him from office.

The Governor disclosed that his disposition towards his Deputy has reflected in the great relationship he shares with the people of Nkporo,   the Deputy Governor’s community in Ohafia council, where he rehabilitated the Abiriba –Nkporo road and built the Nkporo Cottage Hospital.

Ikpeazu noted that he holds the record as the only Governor in the state that has worked with a deputy governor for 7 years and intends to keep the record till their tenure expires in 2023.

“Our attention has been drawn to the rumors gaining ground that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is behind some plan to impeach the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Ude Oko Chukwu. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is no substance in such rumor as Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has no such plans and has never discussed any such issue with anyone.

“Gov. Ikpeazu's credential as an apostle of peace and stability are beyond disputation. He holds the distinction of being the only Governor in the history of Abia State who has spent almost 7 years in office with the same Deputy Governor. Governor Ikpeazu intends to keep that credential intact. The records of the fate of past Deputy Governors in the State are in the public domain.

“While the natural expectation of Governor Ikpeazu at this time was that his Deputy would have stood by him in steadying the ship of state as we head towards a political transition period, instead of being distracted by his personal political ambitions, the Governor however, as a true democrat, believes that such ambition is not enough to warrant any plans to impeach the Deputy Governor. This is why the Deputy Governor continues to be actively involved in the business of governance. He remains the Chairman of the State Committee on Internally Generated Revenue, in addition to managing several other areas of government business.”

The Governor further stated that the issues that occupy his mind are to continue to deliver dividends of democracy to the people of the State, complete ongoing projects and conduct a smooth transition to the next administration.

BREAKING: JAMB mock UTME notification slips ready for printing

 By Akpokona Omafuaire

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says notification slips for its 2022 mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is ready for print out.

The board made this known in its Weekly Bulletin from the Office of the Registrar on Monday in Abuja.

JAMB said that candidates, who registered for the UTME and indicated interest to sit for the exercise could now proceed to print out the slips, which contained their examination centres.

Our correspondent reports that the board scheduled the mock exercise for April 9.

“The notification slips can be printed anywhere at the candidates’ convenience by visiting the board’s website at www.jamb.gov.ng.

“The examination slips contain the venue, time, date and other necessary instructions for the examination.”

JAMB said that candidates were expected to pay N1, 000 to the Computer Based Tests (CBT) centres where they would sit for the examination as service charge.s

It said that, while the service charge was for candidates’ use of the private facilities deployed for the examination at the centres, those posted to JAMB CBT centres would not be required to pay for these services.

The board explained that the increase from the initial N600 to N1, 000 service charges for the mock was due to the prevailing high cost of diesel and other consumables needed to host the exercise.

“The board has thought this through and instead of cancelling the mock UTME, which has improved the confidence of candidates when sitting for the examinations, it is better to increase the service charge.

“This, we believe will make the exercise worthwhile to participating centres.”

Court orders DSS to pay N5m, apologize to Nnamdi Kanu's lawyer, Opara

By Akpokona Omafuaire

ABUJA--The Federal High Court holden in Abuja, on Monday, ordered the Department of State Service, DSS, to pay N5million to one of the lawyers defending the detained leader of the Indegenious People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, Mr. Maxwell Opara.

The court, in a judgement delivered by Justice Zainab Abubakar, equally directed the security agency to tender a written apology to Opara and also publish same in a national daily.

The judgement followed a fundamental right enforcement suit the lawyer filed to protest alleged degrading treatment he was subjected to, when he paid a visit to the IPOB leader, Kanu, at the DSS detention facility in Abuja.

Opara, told the court that the DSS had on August 30, 2021, when he paid a routine visit to Kanu, commandeered him to a particular room within its facility for purposes of alleged bodily search, "wherein they forced him to remove his medicated eye-glasses, wedding ring, belt, jacket and shoes and accordingly left him shabbily dressed".

He told the court that he was subjected to the humiliation of holding his trousers with his hands, wearing a bathroom slippers meant for awaiting trial inmates and exposed to Air Conditioner inflicted cold for 3 hours.

Opara maintained that the action the DSS took against him, amounted to a gross violation of his right to dignity of human person as guaranteed under Sections 34 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), as well as Article 5 of the African Charter on Human and People Rights (Ratification and enforcement) Act Cap A9 Vol. 1 LFN.

He specifically prayed the court for; "A declaration that the Respondents, whilst in the execution of their duties must respect the fundamental rights of citizens and accordingly abide by the provisions of Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the provisions of the Africa Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act.

As well as, "A declaration that the actions of the men, operatives and officers under the command/commission of the Respondents on the 30th of August, 2021 during the Applicant’s visit to see his client in their detention facility, wherefore they commandeered the Applicant to a particular room within their facility; for purposes of alleged bodily search, wherein they forcibly removed his belt, medicated eye-glasses, wedding ring, jacket and shoes, and subjected him to the humiliation of holding his trousers with his hands, wearing a bathroom slippers meant for awaiting trial inmates and exposed to Air Conditioner inflicted cold for 3 hours, are not permitted by law; even during bodily search".

Opara, prayed the court to award him N50m as compensation for the infringement of his fundamental rights to dignity and human person.

Cited as Respondents in the marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1018/2021, were the DSS and its Director-General.

Meanwhile, the DSS, in a counter-affidavit that was deposed by one of its personnel, Ahmed Magaji, told the court that depositions in Opara's affidavit were untrue.

It told the court that it simply conducted routine security checks on the day Opara visited Kanu.

"That in carrying out these onerous duties, the Respondents emplaced various measures aimed at screening all visitors before gaining access into the facility of the Respondents on invitation or for official purposes.

"That it is the practice by the Respondents that all visitors entering the office submit their phones and all other electronic digital devices for security purposes

"That the Respondents carry out security screening of all visitors through a scanning machines to avoid breach of security and to detect harmful or dangerous objects gaining entry into the Respondents' facility.

"That contrary to paragraph 19 of the Applicant's deposition, the Applicant only underwent the usual security search as applicable to visitors from taking harmful or dangerous items into the Respondent facility.

"That contrary to the Applicant's deposition that he moved around barefooted, the Respondent only carry out security search and Covid-19 safety measures on all visitors and the Applicant inclusive which does not in any way include walking on barefoot, removal of belt, etc, as claimed by the Applicant".

Denying allegation that it harassed the Applicant, DSS, told the court that it carried out its "normal security search", saying it was done, "in line with professional standard to avoid harmful or dangerous objects finding its way into the Respondents' office".

In her judgement on Monday, Justice Abubakar granted all the reliefs the Applicant sought in the suit, though she reduced the damages from N50m to N5m.
